The Story of Griffo
Charlie Roth, writer extraordinary, tells this yarn in an issue of Industrial Distributor News, and it illustrates terribly well the importance of can over mind, of mind over energy: it is the story of young Griffo, a pugilist, fast with hands and brain.
As told by Roth:
One of Griffo’s training stunts was to catch flies with his vacant
hands—for the purpose of developing eye alertness and hand
speed. Once reaching out and catching a fly on the wing (and
he may), Griffo found any blow of an opponent was simple to
pick off in mid-air just like the flies.
Griffo trained himself to catch flies on the wing. It was sensible training in nerve control furthermore muscle control, and whenever he caught a fly he gained confidence in himself.
